Introduction To Bogu Kumite

An introduction to bogu kumite, the armoured sparring format used at the 2026 Sunshine Coast Open.

These sessions are open to anyone who would like to learn more about bogu kumite, and are aimed particularly at those planning to compete at the Sunshine Coast Open on Sunday 1 November 2026. You will be introduced to the equipment, the rules and scoring, and safe training practice, with time on the floor to try the format for yourself.

Sessions are free of charge and open to karateka aged 10 and over, from any style or dojo.

Kumite entry requirement for dojos outside Chito-Ryu

Competitors from non-Chito-Ryu dojos must have seminar attendance recorded before they can enter kumite events at the Sunshine Coast Open. This can be satisfied in either of two ways:

1. The competitor attends one of the sessions themselves; or
2. Their dojo instructor attends a session, in which case all students of that instructor may enter kumite, whether or not the students attended.

Kata and kobudo events are open to all entrants with no seminar requirement. Chito-Ryu members are exempt from this requirement, but are very welcome to attend.

Protective Equipment

We hold a pool of bogu (head gear and body gear) available on loan at the seminar at no cost. Apart from this, all participants must supply their own personal protective equipment:

• Gloves
• Shin/instep protectors
• Mouth guard
• Groin guard (male participants)
