Competitor Guide
How to sign up, enter a tournament, and follow along on the day.
Creating an account
Click Register in the top-right, enter your name, email and a password. You'll be logged in straight away.
If you forget your password later, use the Forgot password link on the login page — we'll email you a reset link that's valid for one hour.
Finding a tournament
Open Tournaments from the top of any page. You'll see every public tournament that's open for registration, organised with upcoming events first. Click a tournament to see its events, divisions, venue, and registration dates.
If a friend or coach has given you a direct link (/t/...), that works too — even for private / invitation-only tournaments that don't appear in the public directory.
Registering for a tournament
- Open the tournament page and click Register.
- Fill out the form: name, date of birth, gender, rank and (for most events) weight and height. These determine which divisions you're eligible for.
- Pick your dojo. If your dojo isn't in the list, you can request to join it, or — if the tournament allows it — ask for a new dojo to be added.
- Select the events you want to compete in. Taikai automatically assigns you to the correct division for each event.
- Review the digital waiver (if the tournament has one) and sign it by typing your name.
- Submit. You'll get a Registration Confirmation email with your registration ID and event list.
Registering a minor (for parents)
If your child is under the tournament's Independent Rego Min Age (usually 18), they can't register themselves — you need a parent account. The flow is:
- Create a normal account for yourself (or log in to an existing one).
- Open My Household from your account dropdown in the top-right.
- Use the Add Child button in the children section. They become a linked sub-account that you can register on their behalf.
- When registering for a tournament, pick your child from the competitor list instead of using your own details.
Tournament admins can also add a minor directly. If they do, you'll get a welcome email with a link to claim the child account.
Viewing your registrations
Open your account dropdown in the top-right and click My Profile, or head to your Dashboard — you'll see a list of every tournament you're registered for, with status (pending, confirmed, cancelled, waitlisted), your division assignments, and a link back to each tournament's public page.
Tournaments you've registered for appear under My Tournaments in the directory even if they're private / hidden.
Paying entry fees
If the tournament charges entry fees, you'll see a Pay now button on your registration page. Depending on how the tournament is set up, you can pay by:
- Card (Stripe) — redirects you to Stripe Checkout; confirmation is automatic.
- PayPal — pay from your PayPal balance or a card via PayPal.
- Manual method — bank transfer, cash on the day, or whatever the organiser has listed. The organiser will mark your payment as received when they process it.
Once payment is recorded, you'll automatically get a Payment Receipt email showing the amount, method, and transaction reference.
On the day: schedule, draws & results
The tournament's public page has four tabs you'll use on the day:
- Schedule — running order by ring, with day-of start times if the organiser has published them.
- Draws — brackets for each event & division. Once a draw is published, you can see your bracket position and your opponents.
- Scoreboard — live scores for any active ring. Tap a ring to open the fullscreen public display.
- Results — placings once each draw is finalised. The organiser decides when results go live.
If anything isn't showing up where you expect, the organiser may not have published that draw or enabled schedule visibility yet — ask them directly.
